Big Idea: Many real world situations can be modeled and predicted using mathematics.
Essential Question: How can I use math symbols to describe a pattern?
Problem 4.2
A. Write an equation you could solve to find the number of months it will take Karen to pay for the stove.
Cost=30+15N
B. Solve your equation by using the symbolic method. How many months will it take to Karen to pay for the stove?
305=30+15N
305-30=30-30+15N
275=15N
275/15=15N/15
N=18.333 rounded to 19 months.
Follow Up
1.
a. y=2.5x when y=175
175/2.5 x=70
b. y=19+3x when y = 64
64-19=45
45/3=15. x=15

c. y=2x-50 when y=15
-50=+50
15=50=65/2=32.5. x=32.5

d.y=-2x+14 when y=60
60-14=46=-2x=-23.
x=-23

2. What other methods could you use to solve x for the equations in question 1?
You could use algebra, Guess and Check, Work Backwards.
